Sunday, June 01, 2008

The U.S. Energy Department on Thursday will discuss how to best move 16 million tons of uranium mill tailings off the banks of the Colorado River in Moab, Utah.

The Energy Department’s contractor on the job, Energy Solutions, will move the tailings pile to a disposal site near Crescent Junction.

Officials are studying how to move the tailings in the safest and least expensive manner, and members of the public can offer comments, said Don Metzler, Moab federal project director.

The meeting is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Grand Center, 182 North 500 West.

Energy Department officials will give an update on activities by the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project.
